Th3 Abyss - “Th3 Abyss” Music Video 

I directed this solo video for a self titled single by Th3 Abyss this past summer a few days before he moved from Toronto to Saskatoon. As always I really enjoyed working with him and hope to do so in the near future. 

We shot this video during the same day as “the web” but waited till dark, obviously. Dave Lam, my cinematographer on this shoot,  spent most of his downtime sleeping which in hindsight would have been a smarter thing to do instead of watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Due to the limited budget we didn’t have any money for a concept so it was another performance video. Despite being an early summer night it was unexpectedly cold out which aided in giving us another look as Th3 Abyss had to dress in warmer clothes. The decision to shoot black and white at night also helped in creating a different aesthetic from the previous video we shot. 

The idea to cut between continuous tracking shots came in post as my editor, Drew Stevenson, was playing with a way to structure the video differently. We used the hook of the song as a break from this just to change up the pace.

We initially tried to shoot a performance take with Th3 Abyss walking down the middle of Queen Street but since it was a playoff hockey game that night the taxi cabs were out in full effect so we weren’t able to do a take without being hounded. We moved over to King Street, where there was less traffic and less light but we were able to make it work.

I’m very happy with how this video came out it’s very simple but has a sense of style to it. I’m hoping Th3 Abyss will pop back over to Toronto to shoot another video some time soon.
